Africa’s 10 best universities have put up a strong showing in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings (WUR) 20th edition released on 28 June 2023.
A total of 41 African universities are featured in the QS World University Rankings 2024, with the majority located in either Egypt (15) or South Africa (11).
According to Simona Bizzozero, the communications director at QS Quacquarelli Symonds, 75% of ranked African universities have improved in the current edition.
The institutions are ranked based on 9 metrics that give an indication of their performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook, each weighted according to their importance in the index. These performance indicators include academic reputation (30%), citations per faculty member (20%), employer reputation (15%) and faculty-to-student ratio (10%). Other less heavily weighted indicators include employment outcomes (5%), international faculty ratio (5%), international student ratio (5%), international research networks (5%) and sustainability (5%).

Quacquarelli Symonds Top 10 University Rankings in Africa 2024
- The University of Cape Town: Leading the way for the best universities in Africa is South Africa’s oldest university, UCT. Ranked joint 173rd in the QS World University Rankings for 2024, The campus is set in the beautiful landscape views of the Western Cape. This is a remarkable increase of 64 positions from the previous year.
- University of the Witwatersrand: Ranked joint 264th this year, often referred to as Wits, is a South African university located in Johannesburg, the largest city in the country. This is a great improvement from being ranked at 428 globally and in third place in Africa in 2023. Additionally, according to the university website, 97% of their students secure a job within six months of graduating.
- Stellenbosch University: is ranked as the 283rd university in the world this year. This is a significant improvement from their 454th rank last year. The university was established in 1918 and is situated in Stellenbosch, a town located 50 kilometres to the east of Cape Town.
- University of Johannesburg: Ranked 306th this year, UJ is located in South Africa. Which has made significant progress, jumping from its previous position of 412th. They have an exceptional global research network of 97% according to QS ranking standards.
- University of Pretoria: One of the biggest universities in South Africa, has achieved a significant rise in its ranking, from 591-600 to 323. They have an excellent employment rating of 58.4% according to QS.
- Cairo University: This University located in Egypt is ranked among the top 400 universities globally this year. Ranked 371 globally and 6th in Africa, QS reports a high employment rate of 72.5%.
- The American University in Cairo: The American University in Cairo is now ranked 415th in the world, which is an improvement from last year’s ranking of 416. QS reports an outstanding employment rate of 63.3%.
- University of Kwazulu-Natal: One of the leading public universities is UKZ in Pinetown, South Africa. It has been positioned at 621-630 on the QS World University Rankings for 2024. Improved from a lower ranking of 801-1000 in the previous year.
- The Ain Shams University: ASU in Cairo is one of the best public universities in Egypt’s capital city. It ranks between 721 and 730 in the QS World University Rankings of 2024. It was founded in 1950 and is a huge place of learning, catering to around 180,000 pupils across 15 academic departments.
- North-West University: Coming in as 10th, NWU is situated in Potchefstroom, a city in South Africa. Ranked between 801 and 850 in the QS global ranking, the institution has made progress from its ranking of 1001-1200 the previous year.
