Country Economic Overview
The Central African Republic, commonly known as the Central African Republic or CAR, is a country in Central Africa bordered by Chad to the north, Sudan to the northeast, South Sudan to the east, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo to the south and Cameroon to the west with an estimated population of 5,000,000 in 2020 and an area of approximately 623,000 km².
Central African Republic (CAR) has an abundance of water, agricultural and mineral resources, including reserves of uranium, oil, gold and diamonds, in addition to considerable arable land. Despite this, CAR is considered one of the world’s least developed countries, ranking 188th out of 189 countries on the 2018 Human Development Index.
Despite the continued efforts of national authorities and international partners, the security situation in CAR remains unstable. This instability combined with mismanagement of funds and corruption have been largely responsible for the stagnation and weakness of the country’s economy, which has proved unable to provide basic services to the population.
